    Dynamic Virtual Join Point Dispatch

    Get PDF
Conceptually, join points are points in the execution of a program and advice is late-bound to them. We propose the notion of virtual join points that makes this concept explicit not only at a conceptual, but also at implementation level. In current implementations of aspect-oriented languages, binding is performed early, at deploy-time, and only a limited residual dispatch is executed. Current implementations fall in the categories of modifying the application code, modifying the meta-level of an application, or interacting with the application by means of events—the latter two already realizing virtual join points to some degree. We provide an implementation of an aspect-oriented execution environment that supports truly virtual join points and discuss how this approach also favors optimizations in the execution environment

An elliptic expansion of the potential field source surface model

Context. The potential field source surface model is frequently used as a basis for further scientific investigations where a comprehensive coronal magnetic field is of importance. Its parameters, especially the position and shape of the source surface, are crucial for the interpretation of the state of the interplanetary medium. Improvements have been suggested that introduce one or more additional free parameters to the model, for example, the current sheet source surface (CSSS) model. Aims. Relaxing the spherical constraint of the source surface and allowing it to be elliptical gives modelers the option of deforming it to more accurately match the physical environment of the specific period or location to be analyzed. Methods. A numerical solver is presented that solves Laplace's equation on a three-dimensional grid using finite differences. The solver is capable of working on structured spherical grids that can be deformed to create elliptical source surfaces. Results. The configurations of the coronal magnetic field are presented using this new solver. Three-dimensional renderings are complemented by Carrington-like synoptic maps of the magnetic configuration at different heights in the solar corona. Differences in the magnetic configuration computed by the spherical and elliptical models are illustrated.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure

VMIL 2011 : the 5th Workshop on Virtual Machines and Intermediate Languages

    Get PDF
The VMIL workshop is a forum for research in virtual machines and intermediate languages. It is dedicated to identifying programming mechanisms and constructs that are currently realized as code transformations or implemented in libraries but should rather be supported at VM level. Candidates for such mechanisms and constructs include modularity mechanisms (aspects, context-dependent layers), concurrency (threads and locking, actors, software transactional memory), transactions, etc. Topics of interest include the investigation of which such mechanisms are worthwhile candidates for integration with the run-time environment, how said mechanisms can be elegantly (and reusably) expressed at the intermediate language level (e.g., in bytecode), how their implementations can be optimized, and how virtual machine architectures might be shaped to facilitate such implementation efforts

Influence of the edge quality to the water sorption of remote laser and mechanically cut carbon fibre reinforced polymer

The processing of carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) is complex due to the heterogeneous material structure and the hard and brittle fibres. For the creation of the final contour during component manufacture, the trimming of semi-finished products is necessary. For these processing steps, multiple cutting processes are available. Depending on the chosen process, the structure of the edges can show considerable differences [1]. Reference [2] proves that the surface condition of CFRP influences the diffusivity, maximum moisture content and concentration. The cutting edge forms part of the component surface. The aim of the present study is an evaluation of the influence of the cutting edge condition on the moisture uptake of CFRP. A systematic analysis of the water sorption behaviour of CFRP with edges generated with thermal remote laser and mechanical processing technologies was performed. Also, the effect of edge sealing was considered. Depending on the applied process, differences in the moisture uptake of CFRP could be shown. Several remote laser cut samples with a distinct heat-affected zone (HAZ) absorbed water rapidly. Thermally exposed fibre ends may form capillaries. By choosing suitable laser processing parameters or edge sealing, this effect could be avoided, resulting in inconspicuous water sorption behaviour

Einsatz von Instrumenten bei der klinischen Untersuchung in deutschen HNO-Abteilungen und Privatpraxen heutzutage

Background: The classical forehead reflector as traditionally used by ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physicians for the ENT examination is now iconic for doctors in general. It is unknown which instruments are currently used in Germany to clinically examine ENT patients. Therefore, this study aims to present results of a survey about commonly used instruments. Materials and methods: An evaluation of 321 questionnaires from ENT doctors working in general and university hospitals (172) and in private practices (149) was performed. Results: The ENT mirror examination is nowadays carried out with a self-illuminating headlamp with battery and/or light guide cable. Approximately 20% of respondents also use a forehead mirror. The microscope is used by 90% of doctors to examine the ears; a rigid endoscope was used in 53.3% to examine the larynx, epipharynx (41.1%), and the nose/sinuses (34.6%). Flexible endoscopes and otoscopes are used only rarely. Conclusion: The self-illuminating headlamp, which is more often wireless in eastern Germany, has largely replaced the classical forehead reflector, with which doctors younger than 40 years were no longer trained. At least some organs are also examined very regularly with the microscope or rigid endoscope. The flexible endoscope and otoscope are used much less frequently overall, mainly by younger physicians and ENT doctors working in hospitals. The diagnostic potential of flexible endoscopy may be compromised by the outpatient remuneration structures in Germany

Nach der Schlacht von Lugdunum (197 n. Chr.).

Near the eastern shore of Corsica several Roman lead ingots were found. Weight, size, stamps and especially the moulded inscriptions mentioning L. Septimius Severus show a relation to lead ingots known from Lillebonne and the surroundings of Chalon-sur-SaĂŽne. Lead isotope analyses support a provenance of all these ingots from mines of Britannia (Mendip Hills; Flintshire). Because of the imperial titles, the production of this lead must be dated between the victory of Septimius Severus over D. Clodius Albinus in the battle of Lugdunum on February 19th 197, and February 198. Noteworthy are various stamps of military units on most of these ingots. The find spots in Gallia and near Corsica are strong hints for reconstructing a transport route via Gaulish rivers to Italy and Rome.
